From: San Marcos, Texas Time: 1999-09-06 02:06:02 Comments: At the risk of sounding desperate, I am a 28 yr. old Creole man, working and attending graduate school, who is desperately trying to continue my Creole heritage by marrying a Creole lady! That is very hard to accomplish, especially in Texas! So, if any of you good Creoles know any single Creole ladies(21-30 yrs old)send me an email. I would appreciate it! |

I'm a Creole from Vacherie, but i'm married now living in Easton, PA. My dad's from Edgard where my grandmother still lives, right on the river road. It's a hard geneology to trace back more than a few generations, when no one thought to record all the stories. My great-grandmother died a few years back & I was glad to have known her. |

Look at all the people directly or indirectly related to the Metoyer family. Did Marie Thereze and the frenchman Metoyer have any idea of the number of people that would have this connection all these years later? It does make an individual proud to be a part of such an interesting piece of this country's history. |

Ravare Website: Ravare Creole Family Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Marksville, Los Angeles, Las Vegas Time: 1999-04-28 17:42:09 Comments: Last year I had the enormous privledge of being an Exhibitor at the Natchitoches NSU Folk Festival, July 17 & 18, 1998. The theme was Celebrating Louisiana's Creoles, Their Communities and Culture. That was my first trip to "Cane River" and it won't be my last! Janet told me that legend says, "if you drink the water, you will return". I drank a lot of water, and since I have been back in Las Vegas, a day hasn't gone by without that desire to return to the River cropping up in my thoughts. I can't wait to walk into St. Augustines Church, feel the presence of the ancestors, Pray for us all, and then walk through the cemetery and touch the headstones. I can't wait to eat the best meatpies in the world. I can't wait to sit on the front porch swing, sip tea, smell the flowers, admire the Magnolias and watch the beautiful snow white Egrets in play across the River. I drank a lot of that water and Praise God, don't have to wait long. I will be there in May for The Creole Conference! Now, I just have to hope that Janet allows me to do all the things I want to do at a slow pace. But she won't! She will work me as usual, and I will Love every minute of it. But I will get to do all I want to do, even if I have to run and do it! LOL. See you all very soon! |

I tried posting to this page guestbook the other night, but it didn't work. I have recently moved from down South to Boston for some graduate work. I am VERY homesick. It is great to have found this site!! I hope to find others like myself inthe Boston area. I am presently studying at Boston University. I went to Lafayette U. for my undergraduate degree. I am part of the "Mettoyer clan", hence the name. Like I said, I am very homesick, and am finding it hard to find other Creoles here in this area. I am also finding it hard to FIND some GOOD southern' cookin'. |

I could spend hours justing pressing the arrow down button just to read all the different names and see which ones I know. My Mom was Gloria Du Castaing also Creole and born in New Orleans. Her Dad was Charles(Charlie) DuCasting and they moved to Chicago in the late 50s I think and he opened up Charlie's Fish Market. She's up in heaven now cooking for the angels, I'm certain, and boy do I miss her hot calas in the morning and that great seafood gumbo with toasted french bread in the evening. Other relatives are the Meteyes, the LeCense's and the Harleaux's. I'm open to any email with any news and any history. Seems like we're all related somehow anyway if not by surnames definitely by the culture. Keep up the great job! |

I'm from L.A., but my mother's(Jennifer Aubry) family is from New Orleans, and my father (Joseph "Tommy" Johnson) was born there. My grandfather is Edris Aubry, a great Creole man who taught me much of my Creole heritage, and to never forget who I am. My Grandmother, Alimeda Aubry, came to L.A. with him and thier children for better opportunity. The Aubry's are one of the larger creole families in Los Angeles, which has a good sized Creole population. Check out Creolefest in August, and the Bayou Talk Newspaper, both tributes to our unique and beautiful heritage. I attend Loyola University, New Orleans, and am in the process of collecting information on Creoles, especially the Creole language. Send me any and all info you can share!!! asyamena@go.com |

My mother only knew a little of her mother and fathers past. She didn't know of any relatives beyond that. In 1991 after being out of the Army for 2 years I promised my mother that I would find her family so she would know where she came from. In 1996 I found them. I found my mothers family in Liberty, Texas. They were Creole and had settled there from Lafayette, La. around 1900. Now we know who and what we are and we have generations of family members that we never new existed. After meeting my new family members I am now proud to call myself Creole. I didn't live the life, but I have the blood and heart of a Creole. Thanks, Paul Franco of the Herbert and Godfrey family |

Mathews Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Dallas, Texas Time: 1999-04-05 19:44:50 Comments: "...When I was younger, I was raised to believe that my culture was unique and rich and alive. That there was nothing that could ever take away the pride of my heritage. That my people-the "forgotten people" of La Région d'Îsle Brevelle in Natchitoches, Louisiana-contributed greatly to the history of the United States. And, for a long time, I thought that the Creoles were the only people in the world. It is "the land that time forgot." But it is mine. The people are mine les Créoles: every bit of the French, the Spanish, the African, and the Indian in us. The bayou music zydeco: Keith Frank and the Soileau Band, the accordions, the Eunice two-step, the yélé, Les Bleus de Crève Faim, Y-Ki-Ki Slims. The language Créole our own pidgin dialect, a so-called corruption of the sophisticated French, spoken on street corners, written on signs and billboards, taught in schools, learned in the home: Laissez les bons temps rouler Oh yé yaille Coucou C'est la vie Maumau et Paupau Ce n'est pas mon faut. The food: boudin, cracklings, andouille, filet, étoufée, pralines, bestioles ("crawdaddies"), gumbo, jambalaya, mirleton, beignets, meat pies the famous Lausanne café. The values Catholicism, the preservation of cultural identity, the demand for recognition in a "politically correct" society, the value of education instilled within our children, the "Southernness" of our souls. I have been to Melrose many times. And at Melrose, I have found myself. So I sit and watch the faces of the visitors wondering if they know. There is so much to Creole culture so many things to cherish. And I often lay back and gaze into the sun, then close my eyes. I breathe in the air, the soil, the purity of everything around me. I take in all that I know. They are beautiful thoughts These visions of divinity dance about within my head, and I am proud." (excerpts from one of my college essays on race) |

I have been very interested in my heritage, and have taken liberty to tell as many people as I can about it. I think it is wonderful that there are those who continue to educate others who tend to confuse us with the Cajuns. We are different, and our contributions to the history of the United States--which remain virtually unknown by others--are great. I am proud of my heritage, and I think that if others knew about it, they would be as well. |

Thompson Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Alabama and Upstate New York Time: 1999-03-31 16:43:16 Comments: I have only recently come to accept a Creole identity, because I wrongly believed that calling myself a Creole was somehow a denial of my African-American identity. Now I know this is false. Creoleness is a profound expression of my Africanness, and I want to embrace it. My grandparents are from Louisiana and Mississippi, with a heritage of African, Creek Indian, and various Europeans, probably French and English. I speak Spanish, a wee bit of French and Muskogee (Creek Indian). I have always been interested in Louisiana culture. I have always felt our family had a noticeable psychological difference from other Black people, and now I believe this was our Creoleness coming through. The Creek Tribes now play the "blood quantum" game to decide who is pure enough to be Indian. I am not pure anything. Will I be accepted as a Creole? Many Creole peoples from other lands, Jamaica, Cape Verde, etc, have assumed I was Creole. That got me thinking. They saw my Creoleness before I did. Am I welcome in your organization? |

My family, the Babin's, Hendersons, Chargois' and Williams have deep roots in Louisiana. I think by now we all are aware of the vast roots of the Creole people in Louisiana, and those who have migrated to other parts of the U.S.and abroad. The history is fascinating and has in the past been extemely exclusive. The talents and culture of the people should be known by all. Many think it is extremely color coded and divisive, however I believe it is morally and culturally divided. There should be open discussion and debate on the good and the distasteful culture of the Creole. There is confusion regarding the color cast in the Creole culture. I'm proud to be a African American Creole. Some of my people are mulattos, some are quadroons, some of octoroons, but the majority are of the Creole culture. Let me hear from you. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. |

Now living in Bell Chasse, LA near New Orleans Time: 1999-02-19 03:42:24 Comments: After a suggestion from a friend that we start our own Creole Network, I was surfing the net looking for information on Louisiana Creoles and found this site. I hope to expose my kids to more creole culture and this seems like a good place for information. It seems that in the New Orleans area, a lot of young people don't know much about their Creole heritage and some seem to be asshamed of it. |

Braxton Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Clarence, LA (living in Houston, TX) Time: 1999-02-17 15:51:42 Comments: Hello. A friend and I were in Louisiana this past Valentine's weekend. I have always been fascinated with Louisiana history. I took my friend to see the plantations. However, we did not tour any of them yet. We will return, hopefully, in October for the annual pilgrimage. While we were there this past weekend I visited St. Augustine Catholic Church and it's cemetery. I saw many graves and tombs. However, to see the tomb of the late Augustin Metoyer sent chills up and down my spine. It's amazing that so much has been preserved. The church was open. We went in. It is beautiful. As we turned to leave the sanctuary I looked up and beheld the painting of Monsieur Metoyer. Talking about chills. I enjoyed my visit. Now, I would like more information on the name "Isle Brevelle". How did this come to be? Please e-mail me at the above email address with any information. Thanks. |

In fact my sister is very much in-volved. (Janet Colson) I must say this was a very memorable experience for me. I enjoyed the people, the scene, the air,the music, the food and just to know that I was a part of that. I will keep this memory of my creole heritage alive. This really made me proud of what I am instead of being satisfied as something else. Every creole person needs to experience a part of this, no matter where you are, or who you are today. "We know who we are!". Your support it greatly appreciated. Daddy are you grinning from ear to ear up in Heaven. Send us some blessings. |

Kennerson Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Missouri City,Texas Time: 1999-01-13 21:57:26 Comments: Hi. Great web site! My name is Charles Kennerson, and I am currently researching my family history. I was born in Opelousas and grew up in Port Arthur,Tx. My mother is a Thierry and is from Mallet. Her mother was a Papillion and grandmother was a Gobert. My relatives own the tombstone business on 190 between Mallet and Lawtell. My father(Kennerson) is from Lawtell. Other Surnames on that side are Lavergne, Joseph, and Bellard. My uncle Eve Lavergne(deceased) owned a country store and gas pumps for years on 190 just before going into Lawtell. My research is turning up quite a bit of info. Any info on those surnames would be appreciated. I am especially interested in the history of Mallet and also why the Kennerson surname is more common around this region than in any other part of the U.S. or world for that matter. Any help would be appreciated. |

Although Creole, we do not have a French name to identify with (the French were women). At one time my great great uncle Louis Woodard owned huge portions of Natchitoches. We are not Catholic, and I suspect that was one of the issues when other Frenchmen shot my great grandfather down on his own property. Do you have room for non-Catholic Creoles who have more Indian than French blood? We have all the mixes, eat gumbo and okra, and get together with other family members for a rollicking good time as often as possible. |

Your musical rendition of it is perfect. It is aningenious way of bringing on an immediate smile and a warm"welcome home" to the hundreds of Cane River decendantsscattered across this planet. |

If not you, then maybe it would have been me. I live and work in the Silicon Valley's computer industry. Your "sight" is both refreshing and welcomed. I knew we would do it. Additionally, it's a GREAT pleasure to see that Creoles have not forgotten their history, heritage, the wonderful customs and rich traditions. I miss all that, yet some how I have able to retain and pass all of it on to my children. My people are: Schexnayder, Angelleti, Fredricks, Legeaux, and Rodgriges'. They are from Edgar, Lucie, Vacharie, and New Orleans (Sorry for any mis-spellings). This list is not exhausted, but these are the one's I'm aware of. Mary Delphin-Bordenave for the warm, heartfelt prayer. Both of these will be going into our next family tree album. Leon Roberts aka Leon Robert Website: Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Huntington Beach, California Time: 1998-09-06 04:09:23 Comments: First let me say that this a magnificient idea, establishing a link to the past for our children and generations to come. And, I wish you nothing but the best in your endeavour to construct a clearer picture for all of us. A picture of the proud history that our ancestors shared and past on to all of us of Louisiana creole descent. My birth name is Leon Robert. I was born January 7, 1943 at Bermuda Bridge, south of Natchitochez, on Cane River. I was baptized Raymond Leon Roberts at Isle Brevelle. My parents are John A. Robert of Monroe, La. and Bessie LaCour of Natchitochez, La. My father had 15 children from two marriage. His first spouse was Anna Sarpy, and their children are John Noble, Edward, James, George, Reginald, and MaryAnn. With my mother Bessie LaCour he fathered Eunice, Rosalie, Henry Harry, Raymond (Myself), Antoine (Named for his Grandfather Antoine LaCour), Lucille, Kerry, Jill, and Natalie. The last four were born in California. After migrating to Compton, California in 1946 and entering the predominantly anglo school system here, we children began using an "s" on our last name. We are now known as the Roberts family. We are closely related to several well known family names in the Natchitochez area. They are LaCour, Metoyer, Sarpy, Williams, Llorens, Moran, Bernstine, Roque, Honere, and several others that I can't recall at this time I hope this information is of some value to you. Thanks again for providing this medium for discovery of hidden treasures and re-gaining lost memories. Sincerely, Raymond L. Roberts |
